SMD quartz crystal used on robotics control PCBQuartz crystal oscillator circuit for robotic electronics

Product Overview

Quartz crystals are passive frequency-control componentsthat provide precise and stable timing references for robotic processors, communication interfaces, sensors and real-time control systems.

A quartz crystal uses the piezoelectric properties ofquartz to resonate at a specific frequency. When connected to an oscillatorcircuit inside an MCU, processor or communication IC, it generates the accurateclock required for digital processing and synchronized communication.

Key Functions

  • Provides a stable     reference frequency

  • Controls MCU and     processor operating clocks

  • Maintains communication     timing accuracy

  • Supports precise sensor     sampling

  • Synchronizes distributed     control systems

  • Provides timing for     motor-control algorithms

  • Supports real-time     clocks and timekeeping

  • Reduces clock drift     compared with basic RC oscillators

  • Improves communication     and control reliability

Typical Applications

  • Robot main-control     boards

  • Motor-driver and     joint-control PCBs

Crystal Construction

Quartz Blank

A precisely cut quartz plate vibrates mechanically at itsspecified resonant frequency.

Metal Electrodes

Thin electrodes applied to the quartz convert electricalenergy into mechanical vibration and back into an electrical signal.

Support Structure

Small metal supports suspend the quartz blank inside thepackage while providing electrical connections.

Ceramic Base

Provides mechanical support, electrical insulation andsurface-mount terminals.

Hermetic Metal Lid

The sealed metal cover protects the quartz element frommoisture, contamination and mechanical damage.

Package Terminations

The package may have two active crystal connections plusadditional case-ground pads, depending on its design.

Main Components Around the Crystal

MCU or Processor

Contains an internal oscillator amplifier that works withthe external crystal to generate the system clock.

Load Capacitors

Two matched capacitors provide the load capacitancerequired for the crystal to operate close to its specified frequency.

Bias or Feedback Resistor

Some oscillator designs use an internal or externalhigh-value resistor to establish the oscillator’s operating point.

Ethernet PHY

Uses a crystal or oscillator reference to maintain accurateEthernet communication timing.

RTC IC

Uses a 32.768 kHz crystal for calendar, timestamp andlow-power timekeeping functions.

Decoupling Capacitors

Stabilize the power supply around the processor andoscillator circuit.

Ground Guard Area

A controlled ground region helps shield sensitiveoscillator traces from switching noise and external interference.
